Bang bang This morning, the long-awaited explosions in London. No, Miki and I are fine. Thanks for the txt inquiries.
If anyone remains unclear that we invaded Iraq 2 years ago but failed to occupy and subdue the country, go to the back of the class now and study the map. If anyone has worked out what we’re doing in Iraq and what success there would look like, (see Ed Harriman’s article in the LRB for what failure looks like) please come to the front of the class and explain it to the rest of us.

now, your homework assignment has several parts:
1. address ledeen's factual assertion that britain continues to nurture a "vast terrorist infrastructure."
2. comment on ledeen's claims that:
a) corrupt self-interest and a desire to cozy up to the vicious rulers of arab states is responsible for 1) above.
b) an operating premise that "the arab" is intrinsically incapable of presenting a genuine threat to the west, and in particular britain.
c) an ever-more-active anti-semitism on the part of the british chattering class which holds israel and "the jews" responsible for a).
our intention was never to "subdue" iraq. it was to transform that country into something which would eventually give rise to liberal democracy. you may choose to call this "visionary idealism", but i see it as hard-headed pragmatism.
btw, thanks for the cigar. i was gratified to see that it was NOT cuban.
